A colonel in the British Indian Army,
W. F. Prideaux served in
India for much of his career, especially in the Foreign and Political Departments.
After his retirement from the army in
1895, decorated CSI, he lived in
Kent, where he pursued scholarly work. Besides archaeological papers, he published
bibliographies of
Edward Fitzgerald (
1901) and of
Robert Louis Stevenson (
1903)
