“Calais” [prose]

Paragraph break (MS IX)—Ruskinʼs intention to break a paragraph here is suggested by the lack of a justification mark to take up the (admittedly small) blank space at the end of the line, whereas in preceding lines he has carefully filled even the smallest gap in order to justify the right margin. See Editorial and Encoding Rationale and Methodology: Element, Attribute, and Value Usage—Justification, Runover, and Word Division.

Paragraph break with dash (MS IX)—The dash at the end of this block of text may be a justification mark, indicating that the paragraph carries on at the top of the following page, but the dash does not extend to the right margin. Rather, the purpose of the dash seems to be rhetorical, a direction to catch oneʼs breath between the sequence of imperatives that begin these paragraphs. See Editorial and Encoding Rationale and Methodology: Element, Attribute, and Value Usage—Justification, Runover, and Word Division.
