“The Descent” [poem]
“The Descent” (MS VIII; Works [1903])—W. G. Collingwood omitted this poem from his version of the “Account”. Collingwood gives no explanation for the omission, which may have been a mere oversight; and the editors of the Library Edition restored the poem in their version, also without commenting on the textʼs omission from the 1891 version. Ruskinʼs intended place for the poem is clear, based on the cluster of titles listed in his Proposed Plan for the Continuation of the Account of a Tour on the Continent, which traces the crossing of the Alps, and which is modeled on a sequence of poems in Samuel Rogersʼs Italy. See the contextual notes to “The Descent”.
